Now I'm in China

Colin Here-

So it's been forever since I've made a post to this blog and I apologize. So I am gonna try and make this  a catch up post, or at least buffer to let you know whats up and where I'm at.
A lot has happened since the trip to Berlin. Essentially I returned from Berlin in the middle of August and then almost immediately shipped off to Cincinnati, Ohio to begin my MFA adventure. (hence the never posting). Needless to say grad school is rad and full of opportunities- like the opportunity to go to Jingdezhen, China for 3 weeks, which is where I am now.
I left Cincinnati on Sunday December 1st, had an overnight layover in Shanghai, and the caught a flight to Jingdezhen and we hit the ground running. We just finished up our 1st full day and it is now early morning on December 4th. I feel like I missed a day in there somewhere....
This trip consists of our two faculty member Katie Parker, and Guy Michael Davis- 3 other graduate students and 7 undergraduates. We have taken over the Pottery Workshop here in Jingdezhen, we are provided meals, housing and studio space for our 3 week stay, which is already going too fast.
Day one on the ground here was amazing and overwhelming all at once, but totally awesome. We hit the ground running meeting with moldmakers and getting introduced to vendors and shops where we will be purchasing materials and tools. Everyone here is a master at their trade and the sky is the limit.

I snapped a few pictures today and will post more tomorrow. In the mean time check out Violet Love on instagram, she has been here in Jingdezhen for the past 3 months and an awesome photo archive.

Kunsthalle in Berlin

Today I though would be a good opportunity post about the space that I am working in during my time here in Berlin. I am here for 6 weeks, I arrived on the 7th of July and depart on the 17th of August. I am here with two faculty members (Jordan Tate and Kris Holland) from the University of Cincinnati and seven other students ranging from undergraduate to 2nd and 3rd year graduate students. Currently we are all working towards an exhibition that will open on the 15th of August in a space called Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz.  http://kunsthalle.kunsthochschule-berlin.de/ .

The Kunsthalle is an old grocery store that has been converted into a project work/exhibition space. The space is affiliated with Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin http://www.kh-berlin.de/index.php5?locale=en . We had the opportunity to go to the Weißensee for their sort of end of the year open house. It was very impressive and overwhelming to say the least. So it's really a super great opportunity to be able to come to Berlin and have a space to work in and also have an exhibition. Below are some images of the space, it's has some really great things going on, right now everyone is kind of in work mode. Things are starting to take shape.

During our time here we also have studio visits with local artists, artist talks, and some lectures as well. It is difficult to find time for everything and kinda stinks having to chose, but it's hammer time so early morning and late nights for me. Last night I found out that the street trams and Ubahn quit running after 12:30. I found out the hard way and had to walk home from Alexanderplatz, but it wasn't too bad.

This is the rad closed in courtyard behind the building

Rad Pizza oven, had a failed attempt, but we're gonna try again.

How cool is it to have a fully functioning kitchen at the studio.

This is currently the place where I am tentatively planned to install.

Progress in Berlin

Here is a new up to date video that I have sped up considerably. At this point I am doing some work outside of the studio, to try and stay on schedule. I think this project might be a little bit more ambitious and time intensive than I had previously thought. Now that I have started assembling forms I am getting interested again. The monotony of cutting and folding/preparing pieces was starting to take it's toll, I still have 2/3 of the preparation left to do, but now that I have started creating modules I am gaining interest again.

9.5 Hours Elapsed- Berlin

The second installment of an ongoing experiment in Repetition, during a 6 week Studio Inquiry in Berlin. This process thus far has led me to draw many comparisons to my studio practice of generating multiples, and it's similarities to all of the tasks performed throughout various places in my life, like school growing up in the public school system, to working in the food industry. During this process, similar to my time spent in working in the food industry, I find myself having thoughts of how I could better spend my time, and wanting to quit. This process has physical and mental demands that were unforeseen. I plan to continue this process throughout the rest of my stay here in Berlin. The end result will be an group exhibition with seven other students also here on inquiry.

It's getting Repetitive In Berlin

For those of you that are unaware, I (Colin) am on a studio based inquiry in Berlin for 6 weeks. I have been here for a little over two weeks already. This week we were given access to our studio space, which used to be an old grocery store. http://weissensee.artnews.org/kunsthalle-am-hamburger-platz  At the end of the 6 weeks we will be having an exhibition in the space. My proposal is ever evolving, but I have begun my project and will be posting video's and images of my progress and the space here. Although this isn't necessarily a collaborative installation, I think that collaboration is always present in my work.
